Instructions

1. Make the Tassel

  • Wrap jute around your fingers about 30–50 times (or until you like the thickness).
  • Carefully slide the loops off your fingers and tie another piece of jute about one-third from the top to create the tassel shape.
  • Cut the loops at the bottom of the longer end to give your tassel its classic look.

2. String the Beads

  • Cut a long length of jute (don’t cut it from the roll until you’ve finished stringing to avoid waste).
  • Use a darning needle to thread the wood beads onto the jute.
  • Leave about 6–8 inches of string on each end once all the beads are strung.

3. Attach the Tag

  • On one end of the garland, use a loop knot to attach the wood tag.
  • String the leftover jute back through the beads for a neat finish.

4. Add the Tassel

  • On the other end, attach your tassel using a loop knot.
  • Tuck any extra jute back through the beads for a polished look.

5. Personalize the Tag

  • Use a fine-tip black pen to write on your tag.
  • For a Rae Dunn-inspired look, keep your letters tall, slim, and straight.

6. Style Your Garland

  • Drape your garland over books, layer it on a tiered tray, or wrap it around a vase or demijohn for instant charm!

FAQs

What size wood beads should I use?

You can use any size beads you like, but smaller beads (around 16–20 mm) work well for a balanced, flexible garland.

Can I use a different material for the tassel?

Absolutely! You can experiment with yarn, ribbon, or even strips of fabric for a custom look that matches your decor.

How can I avoid bleeding when writing on the tag?

Use a fine-tip micron pen or test your Sharpie on a spare tag first. If you’re worried about mistakes, write your message before attaching the tag to the garland.

How long should the garland be?

The length depends on where you plan to use it. A garland around 3–4 feet works well for draping over trays or wrapping around jars.

Where can I display this garland?

It looks great on floating shelves, over books, around jars or demijohns, or even as part of a table centerpiece.

How do I prevent the beads from moving too much on the string?

Tie small knots between the beads or use a dab of hot glue to hold them in place.

Can I paint the beads for a more colorful look?

Yes! You can spray paint or hand-paint the beads before stringing them for a personalized touch.

And thank you for describing how to do the lettering on the tag- I would have tried to duplicate it but didn’t realize the ‘horizontal lines 1/3 of the way down’ part. And I’m so glad I know how to make tassels now- I’ll be able to make them out of other materials, too.
