Whether you use store-bought or homemade cloth napkins, in this post, I’ll walk you through a few of my favorite napkin folding ideas—from the simple pocket fold to the elegant fan fold—so you can add some style to your tablescape!

How to Fold Napkins 6 Ways

To make each of these folded napkins, I used my largest dinner size napkins. Their size makes them easy to fold and manipulate, but they are also quite large in some of the finished folds (like the fan fold). So keep that in mind when you’re folding your own napkins!

1. Angled Pocket Fold

The angled pocket fold is one of the easiest napkin folds, and it’s perfect if you want a neat, organized look that lets you tuck in a fork, knife, or even a sprig of greenery. Here’s how to do it:

Instructions:

  1. Start with a square cloth napkin pattern side up, then fold it in half to make a triangle.
  2. Fold it in half again, this time vertically, creating a smaller square.
  3. Take the top layer of the napkin and fold it diagonally down to the bottom corner.
  4. Flip the napkin over and fold both sides in toward the center to create a pocket in the front.

Styling Tip: Slip a piece of rosemary or a printed place card into the pocket for a custom touch.

2. Fan Fold

The fan fold is a classic that brings an elegant touch to any table setting. It’s perfect for holidays or formal dinners where you want to make an impression!

Instructions:

  1. Lay the napkin flat, pattern side down if it’s not reversible.
  2. Starting at one edge, accordion-fold the napkin back and forth in about 1-inch folds.
  3. Once fully folded, fold the napkin in half, securing the bottom part with a napkin ring so it fans out.
  4. Place it upright in a glass or bowl or lay it on the center of a plate.

Styling Tip: For a seasonal look, pair the fan fold with patterned napkins in holiday colors or textures like linen for added elegance.

3. Diamond Fold

The diamond fold looks fancy but is surprisingly easy to master. This fold works well for weddings, holiday dinners, or anytime you want to add a little extra detail.

Instructions:

  1. Lay your napkin on the table patter side down.
  2. Then fold your napkin in half and then in half again.
  3. With the non-folded edges pointed up (see the photos), fold the top layer to meet the bottom point.
  4. Repeat with the rest of the layers, but fold each layer a little shorter than the previous one.
  5. Fold the outer edges slightly under to refine the diamond shape and turn it around so the point is at the top.

Styling Tip: Place a small decorative item, like a mini pumpkin or ornament, in the center of the diamond for a festive touch.

4. Rose Fold

The rose fold is perfect for adding a touch of romance or whimsy to your table. This one works best with a square napkin in a soft, pliable fabric like linen or cotton.

Instructions:

  1. Fold the napkin diagonally to form a triangle.
  2. Starting at the folded edge, roll the napkin tightly until you reach the tip.
  3. Once rolled, coil the napkin into a spiral, tucking the end underneath to secure it.
  4. Gently push out the middle to create a rose effect.

Styling Tip: Place the rose napkin on a contrasting plate to make it stand out, or surround it with a few leaves or flower petals for an extra-special touch.

5. Bow Fold

The bow fold is super fun and works beautifully for birthdays, brunches, or any occasion that calls for a cheerful table setting.

Instructions:

  1. Fold the napkin in half diagonally to create a triangle with the pointed edge at the top.
  2. Fold the pointed edge down to almost the bottom edge.
  3. Fold the bottom edge up to cover the folded point.
  4. Fold in half as shown in the pictures.
  5. Fold each end in toward the center, overlapping them slightly.
  6. Slide one side of the “tail” and the “bow” through a napkin ring.
  7. Push the napkin ring all the way to the middle of and adjust to make a bow.

Styling Tip: Use contrasting napkin rings or ribbons to add color. This fold looks adorable with patterned or pastel napkins for a playful vibe.

6. Envelope Fold

The envelope fold is sleek and polished—perfect for settings where you want to include a menu card, a note, or a place card inside the napkin.

Instructions:

  1. Lay your napkin, pattern side down and fold into a triangle with the point up.
  2. Fold in each side to the middle with a slight overlap.
  3. Fold in each side again until they meet in the middle.
  4. Fold up the bottom (not shown) to create an envelope shape.
  5. Fold the top of the “envelope” down or leave it open.
  6. Tuck a place card or decorative element into the top fold.

Styling Tip: Add a sprig of herbs or a flower for a natural look, and place it directly on top of the dinner plate to greet guests as they arrive.
