Linen closets can be a tricky mess, can’t they? Everyone just shoves the sheets, blankets, and towels wherever they fit. Which, of course, makes finding anything a hassle.

When I finally decluttered and organized my linens, I realized how much space I was wasting with items my family and I didn’t even use. Now my linen storage is functional and refreshing to look at!

How to Declutter and Organize Your Linens: Step-by-Step

In each of our past homes, we only had a single closet to store all the bedding and towels. At this house we keep things in a few closets and cabinets because things are so spread out across three floors. Here’s where we keep things:

  • guest bedding in a cabinet in the guest room
  • guest towels in the basement bathroom (that functions as a guest bathroom when guests are visiting)
  • hand towels in the main floor powder room
  • master bedding in our master walk-in closet
  • master bathroom towels on shelves in the master bathroom
  • kids bedding and towels in the hall linen closet that is nearest to their rooms

Regardless of where you store your them though, how to declutter and organize your linens is the same and I’m going to share them with you.

1. Take Everything Out

Start by pulling all your linens out of the closet, drawers, or bins where you’ve been storing them. Seeing everything together helps you get a clear picture of what you’re working with.

2. Declutter Ruthlessly

Ask yourself:

  • Do I use this regularly?
  • Is it still in good condition?
  • Do I have duplicates I don’t need?

Donate gently used items to local shelters or charities. Repurpose old or worn-out linens as cleaning rags.

3. Sort by Category

Separate your linens into categories like:

  • Towels (bath, hand, washcloths)
  • Bedding (sheets, pillowcases, blankets)
  • Specialty items (tablecloths, guest bedding)

This will make organizing them much easier.

4. Fold and Store Neatly

Neatly folded linens save space and make everything easier to access. I like the idea of storing sheet sets inside one of the pillowcases, it’s a simple trick that keeps everything together. (I’ve not been able to get the kids to do it in their closet though. Maybe you’ll have better luck than me!)

5. Maximize Storage Space

Use bins or baskets for smaller items like washcloths or pillowcases. If your shelves are deep, try adding shelf dividers or pull-out bins to avoid messy stacks.

6. Rotate Seasonally

Keep only the linens you’ll use this season in the closet. Off-season items, like heavy blankets, can be stored in vacuum-sealed bags or under-bed bins to save space.

7. Label for Easy Access

Label shelves or bins for each category. Trust me, this step is a lifesaver when you need to grab something quickly or if others in your household need to find something (or put something away).

FAQs

How many sets of sheets or towels should I keep?

I recommend two to three sets of sheets per bed (one in use, one spare, and one extra) and two towels per person, plus a few for guests.

What’s the best way to store bulky items like comforters or quilts?

Vacuum-seal bags or large storage bins work well for bulky items. Store them in a closet, on top of a cabinet, or under the bed to free up space.

How do I keep linens fresh while in storage?

Make sure they’re completely dry before storing them. Add lavender sachets or cedar blocks to keep them smelling fresh and deter pests.

Decluttering and organizing my linens felt like a small but powerful win. Now everything is easy to find – even in separate closets and cabinets – and I know I’m only keeping what I actually use. If your linens feel out of control, take it one step at a time. You’ll love the sense of order and calm it brings to your home. I know I do!
