Hair tools have a way of taking over a bathroom vanity, don’t they? I used to have brushes, curling irons, and clips scattered everywhere, making it impossible to find what I needed during my morning rush.
If you can relate, let’s get your hair tools decluttered and organized so they’re easy to find and use…and not driving you crazy!

When I finally decluttered and organized my hair tools, it made a huge difference in my bathroom. Not only did I clear up space, but I also saved myself so much time in the mornings.
If you’re looking to keep that momentum going, check out my post on 7 Bathroom Drawer Organization Ideas. It’s another simple project that has a big impact on your daily routine.
Step-by-Step Guide to Decluttering and Organizing Hair Tools
Here’s the how-to for organizing all those hair tools!
1. Gather All Your Tools
Start by pulling out every hair tool you own…brushes, combs, hot tools, and accessories (clips, elastics, etc.). To do this, I like to spread everything out on the counter so I can see exactly what I’m working with.
2. Declutter Ruthlessly
Ask yourself:
- Do I use this tool regularly?
- Is it still in good working condition?
- Does it suit my current hairstyle? (If you change and rotate hairstyles like I do, consider keeping items you’re not currently using but quite possibly will again in a tote under the sink.)
Let go of duplicates, broken items, or tools you haven’t used in years. It’s okay to say goodbye to that curling iron from the 90s!
3. Clean Everything
Before you organize, take a few minutes to clean your tools. Remove hair from brushes, wipe down hot tools (they get all gunked up with hair spray and heat protectants), and sanitize combs. This step makes such a difference in the look of your space, but also in how well your tools will work for you!
4. Sort by Category
Group your tools into categories and sub-categories, like:
- Brushes and combs
- Hot tools (flat irons, curling irons, blow dryers)
- Accessories (clips, elastics, headbands)
This will make organizing possible.

5. Create Functional Storage
Use bins, baskets, or drawer organizers to keep everything tidy. I love using heat-resistant holders like these (affiliate link) for hot tools because they keep them contained even when they’re cooling down.
6. Maximize Your Space
If you’re short on space, consider vertical storage like wall-mounted racks or over-the-door organizers. Drawer dividers are also great for smaller items like elastics or clips.
7. Establish a Routine
I like to “revisit” my hair tools every few months. It’s a quick way to ensure I’m not holding onto things I don’t need and that my system is still working.
FAQs
Heat-resistant mats or pouches are perfect for cooling tools. You can also use wall-mounted holders to keep them off the counter and out of the way.
Wrap cords loosely and secure them with Velcro straps or twist ties. Avoid wrapping cords too tightly around the tool, as this can damage them.
Store rarely used tools in a labeled bin under the sink or in a closet. If you find you don’t use them after a few months, it might be time to let them go.
