What Are Oven S’mores?

Oven smores are simply delicious graham cracker, marshmallow chocolate combos that are baked in an oven instead of made over an open fire.

Why Use The Oven?

There are several reasons you may want to use an oven instead of a fire:

  • You live in the city or suburbs and can’t have an open fire.
  • It’s raining outside and you want to recreate some fun camping memories.
  • It’s summer break and the kids need something creative and fun to do.
  • You’re craving smores, but there’s not a firepit in sight!
  • The cookies will get extra crispy in the oven, which makes for even better smores!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • It’s simple and quick.
  • You can make it allergy-friendly.
  • Clean-up is a breeze!

Oven S’mores Ingredients

  • 16 graham crackers
  • 8 large marshmallows
  • 8 squares of thin chocolate (from chocolate bars)

Variations

Aside from the good ol’ fashioned smores, you can make multiple variations just by changing up the ingredients a bit:

  • Instead of graham crackers, try your favorite chocolate chip cookies, Oreos, Girl Guide cookies, wafers, or shortbread cookies.
  • Instead of the regular milk chocolate bar, try dark chocolate, Reese peanut butter cups, mini Snickers, Rolos, chocolate chips, or other chocolate bar pieces.
  • In addition to the cookies, chocolate and marshmallows consider adding a dollop of peanut butter, almond butter, cream cheese, caramel, Nutella, or other spread.

How to Make Oven S’mores

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Prepare the baking sheet by lining it with aluminum foil and/or parchment paper.
  3. Begin to build your smores by laying out half the graham crackers on the prepared baking sheet. Then place a thin chocolate square on top of each graham cracker and one marshmallow on top of each chocolate piece.
  4. Bake. Place cookie sheet in the oven for about 5 minutes or until the chocolate gets a little soft and the marshmallows start to brown and lose their firm shape.
  5. Finish assembling the smores. Remove the cookie sheet from the oven and place one graham cracker on top of each marshmallow.
  6. Serve warm.

Serving Suggestions

Serve alongside hot chocolate, coffee, or tea.

If you really want the camping experience cozy up on a large picnic blanket on the floor (maybe next to a gas fireplace).

You can wrap up little s’mores packs as gifts too!

Tips

  • Wait on the top cookie. When making oven smores it’s best to wait to put that top graham cracker (or another cookie) on. That’s because it will likely slide right off as the marshmallow melts in the oven.
  • Let it burn. If you like the campfire burnt taste of marshmallows that have been cooked a wee bit too long, go ahead and leave it in the oven for a touch longer for a similar effect.
  • Play with it. Use some of the variations above to make your oven smores even more fun!

Storage

Cooked smores don’t really keep well for later, which is fine since you’ll likely not have any leftovers anyway!

FAQs

What chocolate is best for s’mores?

Classic milk chocolate is the best. But you can absolutely mix it up and use dark chocolate, white chocolate, or any other kind of chocolate you like.

What is the best marshmallow to use for oven s’ mores?

Large or jumbo marshmallows tend to work best. You can use mini marshmallows, but you may find they like to fall off the cookies a lot.

When making oven s’mores should I line the baking sheet?

Since melted chocolate and marshmallows are very sticky, it is best to line the baking sheet before baking for easy clean-up.

How long do you bake s’mores?

Ovens all vary, but the best cook time for oven smores is 5-10 minutes.

Dietary Considerations

Oven smores can be made allergen-free with a few substitutions. To make your smores:

  • Gluten-free: These can be made gluten-free by using gluten-free graham crackers and other gluten-free ingredients too.
  • Corn-free: If you have issues with corn you can buy non-corn marshmallows from the health food store and other stores. (We like to use Dandies brand.)
  • Dairy-free: If dairy is your Cryptonite, buy non-dairy chocolate for your smores!
