Tips for Maintaining Your Painted Interior Doors
Maintaining your painted interior doors is crucial for preserving their beauty and extending their lifespan. Here are some essential tips to keep your doors looking their best:
1. Regular Cleaning
Dust and dirt can accumulate on painted doors, dulling their appearance. Use a soft cloth, Swiffer Duster or microfiber towel to regularly wipe down the surface. For deeper cleaning, mix a mild detergent with warm water and gently scrub with a sponge.
2. Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Stay away from abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals that can damage the paint finish. (Don’t use Mr. Clean Magic Erasers – ask me how I know that one!!) Instead, opt for gentle cleaning solutions designed for painted surfaces.
3. Inspect for Damage
Regularly check for any signs of wear, such as scratches or chips. Address these issues promptly by touching up the paint with a small brush to prevent further damage.
4. Protect Against Scratches
Consider adding door stops to prevent doorknobs from hitting the door surface, which can cause unsightly dings. You can also get door guards or protective plates for areas that tend to get a lot of wear. (Something we should probably do for our powder room – as you can see below the door gets quite worn near the handle.)

5. Control Humidity Levels
High humidity can cause paint to peel or blister. Maintain a stable environment with dehumidifiers or air conditioning, especially in areas prone to moisture, such as bathrooms and kitchens.
6. Repaint When Necessary
Over time, even well-maintained doors may need a fresh coat of paint. Look for signs of fading, chipping, or wear and schedule repainting as needed to keep your doors looking fresh.
7. Handle with Care
Encourage family members to handle doors gently. Avoid slamming or pushing doors whenever possible, and use the knobs instead of putting your hands on the door itself to close it, which can lead to damage over time.

FAQs
I give mine a quick wipe-down every couple of weeks and a more thorough cleaning every few months.
I prefer mild, non-abrasive cleaners. Harsh chemicals can wear down the paint over time.
For minor scuffs, I’ve had good luck with a gentle sanding and a quick touch-up of paint.
