GIRLS ROOM MAKEOVER BUNK BEDS

BUILT IN DESK

We started this project months ago and we are relieved happy ecstatic that it’s all done.

(It wasn’t a particularly difficult project, but life just sort of got in the way of getting finished sooner.)

We never really showed Lillian and Megan’s room at this house before because we just moved them into the room ten days before Christmas 2012 – and then left things as they were for almost two years! (You know, life happens!)

GIRLS ROOM BEFORE

What a change, yes?!

girl's room makeover before and after

We actually partnered with our old friends at The Home Depot for this project – knowing we’d need a lot of supplies to pull off the organization we were hoping for:

  • desk space to do homeschool work at
  • LOTS of shelving for books, toys, backpacks, skateboards, etc.
  • some way to display the girls’ art and craft creations
  • closet organization for clothes and laundry
  • hooks for towels and house coats
  • places for each of the girls to do their hair and put on earrings, etc.

We also wanted to make the space pretty with new art, bedding and pillows.

Did I mention we’re all more than pleased with the results?

And there was plenty of room for a few old favorites too.

GIRLS ROOM CROSS STITCH AND STUFFED BUNNY

The bunk beds originally were built when all three kids were much smaller – which is why the top bunk used to look an awful lot like a crib. I was terrified someone would fall off!

Now that they’re all bigger (and in the double digits!) it was time to update their beds.

To make the new bunks, Dean actually dismantled and used pieces from the old one. We simplified the railings, fattened up the steps (they were sort of feet-pinching before)….

And raised both bunks to allow for under bed storage boxes that hold a plethora of stuffed animals!

UNDER BUNK BED STORAGE

The closet got a shot of color with some bright teal paint and some much needed, hard-working organizational pieces.

CLOSET ORGANIZER GIRLS ROOM

Hanging closet organizer for clothes, simple baskets for laundry and storage boxes for seasonal clothes storage. Practical and economical – and hidden by a color coordinated curtain!

BUNKBEDS AND CLOSET WALL

But the desk and all the built-in shelves are really the stars of the room. The pièce de résistance, if you will.

BUILT IN DESK AND SHELVES

The bulletin board is just cork squares from the dollar store sticky-taped to the wall!

BUILT IN BOOKSHELVES

See? Lots and lots of storage space for two growing girls!
