How to Store and Organize Your Laundry Supplies

Organizing my laundry supplies has been key to a smoother, more efficient laundry day for everyone (Dean does his and my laundry and the kids all do their own). With a dedicated space for everything we all save time, reduce frustration, and bring order to an often-overlooked area.

A tidy laundry room setup also helps me spot when supplies are running low, so I (almost) always remember what to add to my weekly grocery order – whether that’s store-bought products or my favorite homemade laundry soap supplies. With a few simple organizing tricks, I can keep my laundry area functional and clutter-free.

How to Organize Your Laundry Supplies

Organizing your laundry supplies can be simple and easy. Here’s how to organize your laundry supplies, like I do!

1. Create a Dedicated Space

  • Choose a Spot: Identify an area for your laundry supplies—this could be a shelf, cabinet, or even a dedicated cart.
  • Accessibility: Make sure this space is easily accessible when you’re doing laundry.

2. Use Clear Containers

  • Visibility: Clear containers allow you to see what you have at a glance.
  • Labeling: Label each container for quick identification. Consider using a label maker or decorative labels for a personal touch.

3. Organize by Category

  • Grouping: Organize your supplies by category—detergents (whether you use store-bought or homemade laundry soap), stain removers, fabric softeners, and dryer sheets.
  • Vertical Space: Utilize vertical space by stacking containers or using shelf risers.

4. Keep Frequently Used Items Handy

  • Reachability: Store items you use regularly at eye level or in a convenient caddy that can be moved around easily.
  • Rotate Stock: Keep track of what you have and rotate older supplies to the front to avoid expiration.

Initially our laundry room also housed extra pantry items like canned foods and such, but when we decided to move that sort of thing to our basement pantry, the shelves instead became home to more of the household cleaners and supplies.

5. Consider a Laundry Basket for Supplies

  • Handy Organization: A pretty or even just practical basket (like a laundry basket) can hold frequently used items like detergent, dryer sheets, and stain removers, or even paper towels, keeping them together and portable if needed.

6. Regularly Review Your Supplies

  • Declutter: Set a schedule to review your supplies and get rid of anything you don’t use. This helps maintain a clutter-free environment.
  • Stock Up: Take note of items that are running low to ensure you never run out when you need them.

Laundry Room Storage FAQs

What items should I keep in my laundry area for easy access?

This totally depends on where your laundry room is in your home, and how big it is. The basics would be detergent, stain remover, and dryer sheets. I also keep all our household cleaners, the vacuum, broom, mop, and paper products in my family’s laundry room.

How can I organize my laundry area to make it more functional?

Think of the room in terms of zones. If you keep more than the basics in your laundry room, make sure to keep the detergent near the washer, the dryer sheets near or on the dryer and the cleaning supplies in a cabinet or on shelves.

By taking the time to store and organize your laundry supplies thoughtfully, you’ll make your laundry routine much more efficient and maybe a wee bit more enjoyable. Happy organizing!
