5 Ways to Prepare Your Home for a Cozy Fall (No Shopping Required)

I love when summer slowly starts giving way to fall with cooler mornings, golden light, the promise of routines returning. But before I pull out any pumpkins or buy new decor (if I buy anything at all), I like to take a few simple steps to ease our home into the cozy season.

The best part is, you don’t need to spend a dime to make your home feel warmer, softer, and more inviting. These are things I actually do each year to shift the mood in our house using what we already have on hand.

Shannon Fall!

One of my favorite ways to start? A simmer pot on the stove. If you haven’t tried one yet, grab my free Fall Simmer Pot Recipes – they’re so easy and smell amazing. (If you love them, there’s also a full Simmer Pot Kit available with seasonal blends and printable labels!)

Cozy Starts with Simple Shifts

You don’t need a big budget, a bin of decorations or even a trip to your local farm (although that’s always fun!) to make your home feel like fall. These small changes take just a few minutes – but they’ll help your space feel calmer, cozier, and more inviting as the seasons change.

1. Swap heavy or bright textiles for cozy layers

You don’t need to buy new pillows or blankets – just rotate what you already have. I usually tuck away anything super summery (like linen or lighter florals) and pull out soft neutrals, knits, or faux fur. A folded throw over the arm of a chair can instantly warm up a room.

I also love the blanket “wall” we have in our living room – simple hooks on the wall where we hang throw blankets. (Truthfully we started doing this so the dog wouldn’t “dig” in all of them. But now I love the extra coziness it gives the room.)

2. Rearrange your furniture (just a little)

This one might sound silly, but it works. Even just angling a chair closer to the fireplace or creating a little reading corner can make your space feel fresh and fall-ready. It’s a no-cost way to spark that cozy, nesting feeling without a full room makeover.

3. Clean and fluff what you already love

Before I bring out anything seasonal, I give our favorite cozy things a quick refresh – throw blankets get washed, chairs get lint-rolled, candles are wiped down. It makes everything feel new again, without adding a single new item.

4. Let fall scents do the heavy lifting

Scents have a way of setting the mood more than anything else. That’s why I always start the season with a simmer pot on the stove. Cinnamon sticks, orange peels, and cloves can make your whole home feel warm and welcoming in minutes.

5. Tidy and declutter just one or two key spaces

Clutter makes cozy harder. If I’m short on time (which, let’s be honest, is a lot of the time), I focus on just a couple of high-impact areas…like the coffee table and the kitchen counter. A quick reset in those zones can completely change the feel of a room.

FAQs

Do I have to decorate to make my home feel fall-ready?

Not at all. Fall is more about the feeling…warmth, comfort, routine…than the things. These steps help create that feeling without buying anything new.

What if I do want to decorate later?

You absolutely can! But starting with what you already have gives you clarity and helps you decorate more intentionally if and when you do buy something.

How early should I start cozying up for fall?

There’s no rule. I usually start around mid-August or when the evenings feel cooler or when I notice the sun setting earlier. You do what feels good in your home!

You don’t need a seasonal shopping haul to make your home feel cozy for fall. Just a few simple shifts using what you already have can help your space feel softer, calmer, and more welcoming for the season ahead.
