5 Simple Daily Habits to Keep Your Home Clutter-Free

Keeping a clutter-free home might feel like a dream to you right now. Especially if your house is feeling particularly overstuffed. But I’ve learned it’s definitely achievable with just a few simple habits.

Years ago, my home often felt overwhelming with stuff piling up everywhere. I’d try to tackle it all at once, only to end up frustrated. But once I started practicing a few daily habits, so much changed.

When I first started these habits, I wasn’t perfect at them, but that’s the beauty of small steps...they add up over time.

Keep Your Home (Mostly) Clutter-Free with These 5 Daily Habits

1. Make Your Bed Every Morning

This might seem simple, but it sets the tone for the day. Making your bed instantly makes your bedroom look tidier (even if the rest of it is not) and gives you a small win to start the day.

2. Do a Quick 5-Minute Reset Before Bed

Every night, I spend just five minutes tidying up. This is something Dean and I have made a habit of for years. We focus on putting things back where they belong, clearing counters, and fluffing throw pillows. It’s amazing how this small effort keeps things from piling up. And it makes starting out the next morning so much nicer too!

3. Clear Surfaces Daily

Flat surfaces like kitchen counters, tables, and desks are clutter magnets. I make it a point to clear at least the main ones off each day. Whether it’s putting away mail, wiping down the counter, or clearing the dining room table, clearer surfaces make a huge difference in how our homes look and feel.

4. Handle Mail and Paperwork Right Away

I used to let mail pile up on my kitchen counter, and it drove me nuts. Now, I sort through it as soon as it comes in. Junk mail gets recycled immediately, and important papers go into their designated spot (for us that’s the hanging file folder tucked away in a kitchen drawer).

5. Put Things Back After Use

This one might sound obvious, but it’s a game-changer. Whether it’s shoes, dishes, or craft supplies, I make a habit of putting things back where they belong as soon as I’m done using them. It saves so much time later and keeps clutter from spreading. This becomes super easy when it’s a habit.
