I don’t know about you, but over the years I’ve had a hard time finding and holding onto a hutch that I love for the long haul for the dining room.
At our last house we were given a hutch top which we paired with a dresser and then we painted the whole thing in a beautiful off white. But alas, it sold with the house and we began the hunt again, with a wee budget.
Which is when I repainted a $40 found hutch and made it beautiful for the last couple of years.
However when we did the big living room and dining room switcheroo a couple of months ago, I started looking for a more permanent solution.
But instead of looking for “hutches” I started looking for glass-door bookcases!
Using Bookcases in the Dining Room
Using bookcases in the dining room is not a new thing and really it makes a lot of sense to use them there:
- bookcases offer a lot of storage
- both dishes and glassware fit well on most bookshelves
- things like napkins, utensils and place mats can be stored in baskets or crates on bookshelves
- glass door bookshelves can keep out dust and make everything inside look extra fancy!
So which bookcase do you choose to use in the dining room?
Honestly that’s totally up to you! It all depends on the look you want to achieve and how much you need to display and store.
If you have a buffet like we do, you may only want to store and display plates, bowls and glasses and not other dining room accessories. If you don’t have as many glasses and as much extra dishware as we do, then you can definitely go with a bookcase that’s on the smaller side.
Just measure the space you want to put the bookcase in. Then decide if you want doors or not. If you do, decide whether you want glass doors. I knew I wanted one with glass doors to help keep out dust and kids – and a nosy little puppy! Then go from there.
Which glass-door bookcases are my favorite?
I searched through quite a few bookcases before I found the one I wanted for our house.
Here were the top 6 contenders:
Now that I’ve shown you what my top choices are, which ones are your favorites? What storage do you have in your dining room?
P.S. I’ll be back soon to show you which bookcase we chose to use in our dining room! If you follow us on Instagram, no telling! 🙂
