Ever have one of those weeks where you just wanted to cry because you were so tired? Yeah, me too.
But it’s a good thing. Really.
Creating with the Stars is in its final round and we made it to the top three! I couldn’t be happier, more thankful for my handy husband….or more tired. BUT – and this is a HUGE BUT (one t not two!) – Dean and I adore every single project we have made so far. And every single one of them now lives in our home and makes us smile every day. And the project for the last round will be so worth it in the big scheme of our house. I can’t wait to show you! (I hope my brain doesn’t explode from not sharing sneak peeks on Instagram. Goodness – the anonymous part of the contest is the hardest part!)
Anyway, Trash to Treasure is supposed to be what this post is about. So let’s get on with it shall we?
Have you ever been to a thrift store and seen one of those old-school folding TV tray/tables? Or maybe you have one or two (or the whole set?) kicking around your attic or basement. You know, like this one:
Well, I found one of these little (hidden) gems at Value Village for $4.99 so I scooped it up for a Trash to Treasure project.
Are you curious what I did with it?
TV Table Makeover
Ta-da! I used my beloved Rust-Oleum oil rubbed bronze spray paint, some leftover grey and a little numbers/grain sack action to create a much more stylin’ TV Table!
Supplies
- TV table/tray
- Rust-Oleum oil rubbed bronze spray paint
- light grey paint
- wide Sharpie or black paint and small brush
- computer
- paper
- printer
- pencil
- sandpaper
- dark or antique wax
- rag
Instructions
1. Sand all surfaces of tray table.
2. Open table and place top down on a drop cloth in a well ventilated area. Spray with Oil-Rubbed Bronze spray paint. Apply a second coat if necessary. Let dry.
3. Place table upright and paint top (including the edges) with light grey paint. I used CIL’s Stratosphere mixed into Sherwin Williams paint – leftover from the inside of our Grey Tweed Hutch. Apply second coat if necessary. Let dry.
4. Print out any numbers/letters/words/graphics of your choice. The fonts I used for this are Birmingham Elongated and Birmingham Titling.
5. Scribble all over the BACKSIDE of your design with pencil.
6. Place paper right side up onto tray table. Trace outline of graphic with pencil. This should leave the outline on the table top.
7. Fill in graphic. I used a black Sharpie. But a paint pen or paint and brush would work well too. Let dry.
8. Lightly sand and distress as desired.
9. Seal or protect with was or wipe on poly. I just used some Miss Mustard Seed Antiquing Wax.
That’s all! A cute little side table all made-over.

You are good! I have seen those types of TV tables at Walmart and they are not half bad because they are wood, but they are very blasĂ©. Your renovation looks fantastic! Thank you for the inspiration đŸ™‚

This is a fabulous makeover! Pardon me but my eyes see black on the legs and off white on the top. Not sure if bronze is showing up as black in the pics? My understanding is that the underside of the table and legs have bronze, the top has grey (which seems like off white to my eyes)? Hope you can clarify, I have a table like this and would love to try your technique! Thanks for the inspiration as always.
Oil rubbed bronze often looks black. You can really only see the glint of bronze in some lights. It’s similar to oil rubbed bronze door hardware – it’s almost black too. And the top is an off-white called Stratosphere. It was the color we used on the INSIDE of our Grey Tweed Hutch, which is maybe why you’re confused? Have fun painting your table!
Great project! I have a set of these I’ve been wanting to paint but I’ve been putting it off because I just wasn’t sure how I wanted to paint them. Love this so maybe I’ll get started. I keep them in a corner because they are so ugly but sometimes we need them, so yeah, I’ve been hanging on to them for over 20 years! Thanks for sharing your project.

I live this idea! I have a set of these wooden tv trays with stand that are in bad condition. I was going to throw them out and get new ones, but after seeing this post, you’ve inspired me to repurpose them instead. Hope mine come out as beautiful as yours did! Wish me luck? Lol
