As many of you know our last house was a bungalow. Which of course means no stairs (inside anyway). So I couldn't do fun things like this:
But our new house is a backsplit which definitely means stairs – a few going up and a few going down. They sure weren't pretty though:
Ack! Look at that runner and the grungy peach-colored paint!
But with some help, I made quick work of removing the ugly and getting started on our painted stairs beautification project!
Painted Stairs – Numbered with Text
- screwdriver, hammer, etc to remove runner
- paint and paint brush for riser
- computer, paper and pencil for “stencil”
- black sharpie
Step 1: Remove the runner and all screws, nails, etc. (Filling in the holes, etc is a good idea too. However we're going to be refinishing the floors and stair treads eventually so I skipped this step for now.)
Step 2: Tape off the steps and paint the risers. I painted the risers the same color as the new wall paint in the side entry, Sherwin Willams Crushed Ice.
Step 3: Print out words or numbers from the computer in desired size and font. Pencil on the back to make a transfer of sorts.
Step 4: Align and tape the paper to each riser. Trace over numbers/words with pencil – this will create a light pencil outline on the riser.
Step 5: Trace and fill in the pencil line with a black Sharpie. (Alternately you could paint the letters/numbers but depending on the font chosen this may require a very tiny brush and a very steady hand!)
How about a little before and after side-by-side?
It's not the biggest or most impressive DIY – but it is an improvement and it was completely free!
What do you think – better after? Do you have any old stairs you could paint?
