Monochromatic Dining Room

Our new monochromatic dining room.

I was so torn.

When we listed our house for sale in the summer, I desperately wanted to keep all the light fixtures we had so carefully chosen and installed. Our realtor told us it was a bad idea because they were part of the charm of the house and something new buyers would love. I was sad to let them go, but I knew she was right. So I agreed.

I started looking around for new fixtures for the new house and wouldn’t you know it, I totally fell in love with a few.

One particular light fixture caught my eye while I was in California in September. It was hanging over a table in the lodge I was staying at and when I spotted it I just knew. (You know, like when Dean and I got together and we knew.)

When I returned home I searched and searched for the same one and finally found it at one of my absolute favorite online stores, Wayfair. (You knew that was coming, right?)

The catch was after we moved in, we had to have electricians come in and install an electrical box for it – somehow families had lived with just pot lights in the dining room for 17 years!

Okay so first a couple of before photos from our first week here…

(Don’t tell my kids I shared those pictures. They may or may not be overly happy with Momma for that!)

Anyway, now that it’s finally all sorted, installed and on its own dimmer, I’m happy to share our pretty little new light with you. You know, along with our newly painted – and now mauve-less – dining room!

We have plans for some lovely trim and a coffered ceiling project soon, and our tufted settee will be in here too (it was out on loan when I took photos). We’ve also already enjoyed a few meals in this space and I’m looking forward to so very many more shared with friends and family!

  1. Gah! Loooooove it – I can’t even tell you! Your house is looking so awesome!!!!
Merry Christmas to your family! I’m sure it will be very Merry in the new digs!

  2. You amaze me at all you get done what with a recent big move and the height of the Christmas season.

Love the light fixture. And a coffered ceiling would fit perfectly in the existing ceiling space.

    1. LOL. Well I am exhausted and I’m wayyyy behind on marking my kids homeschool work (working on that today though!). But I REALLY wanted the main floor to be pretty for the holidays! And yes, the ceiling is already set up perfectly for the coffered ceilings!

  3. Gorgeous!!!!
Your curtains look different from the IKEA link yiu have…did you add fabric to the front of them??
    Merry Christmas!!

  4. Looks wonderful! I agree with Dawn, the curtains look different than what is shown on the IKEA site. I really like how you have yours and would ask if you could let us know the secret to such a great look. Congratulations.

    1. Very true. Maybe they used candles? Maybe they just dimmed the pot lights? Who knows? I’m certainly happy we have a chandelier now though!

  5. I love your room! I would have every meal there 3 times a day forever! You have created a tranquil, serene and lovely welcoming space for dining, coffee with friends or just a beautiful space to sit and write Christmas cards! (keeping in season) The variety of textures make the room come alive, I feel like I could touch each surface just looking at the computer screen. Your table and chairs on that gorgeous floor are perfect!

    1. Well we do have three meals a day here right now – although if our new bar stools ever get here a few meals will be at the island instead just for ease of clean up. I’m so glad you like the new dining room, Judy!

  6. I love how your style speaks to me and my soul:) thank you! It gives me such creative drive, and trust me we all need that some days. Keep going!

  7. Hi! I love everything you have done here! From the color of paint to the decorating- just beautiful!! Your new light is gorgeous and looks perfect in your room! I was just coming back to comment on your curtains and see others have also asked!:) I just purchased these same curtains for my bay windows and they are sooooo long! I haven’t cut them just yet and so glad I didn’t- I think I know your little trick!!:) I’m anxious to see what you share!!:) Thank you so much for sharing your source list- I love that!!:)

  8. I think you’ve just given me the inspiration to paint my walls white! SW Eider White has been a favorite of mine for years(I’ve been using it on the trim and on my bathroom doors) and it looks stunning on those walls. I think I may just have to give it a try now!

  9. Hi again, Shannon. Happy New Year! Just checking to see if you shared with us how you did your curtains in your dining room yet? If you did, I missed it and I don’t want to miss anything. I sew and think I have an idea how you did it but, it’s always better to hear from the pro! I don’t know where you get your energy. Keep it up, you inspire us.
