Can’t find stockings you love at the store? Here’s how to make your own Christmas stockings in 30 minutes or less!
We have a treat today. Our friend, Kristi is here from Making it in the Mountains to share how to make your own Christmas stockings in 30 minutes or less!
Hello friends! I’m thrilled to be popping over from Making it in the Mountains again today and I’ve definitely got something pretty special up my sleeve! I’m so excited to be sharing my very first holiday post of the season with y’all today!
These lovely little Christmas stockings are going to look so perfect hanging on our fireplace this holiday season, but until we dig out all things Christmas and officially decorate the house next weekend, I think they look so pretty hanging in front of this DIY Faux Fireplace that we created for our Farmhouse Master Bedroom.
I’m telling you friends, you won’t believe how simple these beautiful, lined stockings were to make!
How to Make Your Own Christmas Stockings
Find a pattern you like
I started with a pile of fabric and a stocking pattern like this one.
Fold and pin your fabric
After folding the fabric in half with right sides together, I pinned my stocking pattern to both layers and cut out what would be the outside of my stocking from a lovely cream coloured canvas. I then repeated this with a white linen fabric that I had chosen to line the inside of my stockings. Finally, I used the cuff pattern to cut out a double layer of cuffs – I chose to cut them from my lining fabric to offer a bit of contrast from the canvas I was using for the main part of my stockings.
The plan
Keeping right sides together, I stitched the outer stocking pieces together with a 1/4″ seam all around the outside edge, leaving the top of the stocking open. I did the same with the lining pieces, except this time I tucked loop of string sandwiched between the two layers to make a hanger for my stocking – I placed the string near the top with the two ends tucked up against the raw edge running up the back of the stocking. I realize this all sounds terribly confusing and I totally forgot to snap a picture of this, but I did stage a photo after the fact using my pattern to show you just how simple it really is! PS. You could also use ribbon to make the hanger, to give it a more polished look.
Finally, I tucked the bottom edge of each cuff piece under and sewed a 1/8″ seam along to hold it in place. There’s no need to sew the rest of the edges as they’ll all end up tucked in somewhere.
Add embellishments
Then came the fun part … it was time to decorate! I dug out all of my ribbons and fancy details to embellish the cuffs with, tacking them on to my cuff pieces with a quick line of stitches wherever needed. I had so much fun playing around with all sorts of combinations!
With each cuff piece looking it’s very best, I paired them all up right sides together and ran a line of stitches down each side, leaving the top and bottom open.
Put it all together
And finally my friends, it was time to put them all together! I started by tucking the cuff (still stuck right sides together) inside my outer stocking piece (also still right sides together), matching the top seams. Then I flipped my lining right side out and tucked it inside the other layers so that the right side of my lining was matched up to the right side of my cuff.
Making sure that the top raw edge of all three layers was lined up, I simply stitched around the top of the stocking, but leaving a 4″ opening so that I’d have room to turn that stocking right side out.
With everything all stitched up, I simply pulled it all through that little hole so that everything was facing the right way. Don’t forget to stuff that lining back inside the stocking.
I can’t tell you how excited I was to see it looking like a stocking!!! *Have I mentioned that I’m not much of a seamstress?*
Finish
The very last step was to fold in the seams on that little hole left in the top and run a quick stitch all around the top, closing the hole up and giving it all a nice finished edge.
And that’s it my friends, beautiful, custom stockings and all in less than 30 minutes!!!

My aha moment was when you talked about undertones!
I found my style and was able to bring our small space together by creating a cozy and inviting home for our family of 8! My aha moment was when you talked about undertones! At first I was confused about what the undertone of my room really was. But after carefully analyzing the details I figured it out! That was the moment when I could bring everything together.

I’m falling in love with our home all over again.
My ah-ha moment was when I realized how much time and money we have spent in the past couple of years because I was going about things all the wrong way. I have painted rooms, changed decor and bought things over and over again and just could not get comfortable. I loved the house but it didn't feel like home. We did not focus on our true design style and never finished a room. It caused us to purchase things we didn't love. BUT now because of your course, we have found our style, re-focused on our whole home design plan and are decorating one room at a time. It is really exciting and I am falling in love with our home all over again."

Lightbulb moment!
Your explanation of paint colors was the light bulb moment for me! Your explanation would have saved us from painting a room twice along with saving money for the painter's extra visit. I am enjoying your teaching. Thanks!

Love this idea!
Orbs are such a great decor item to add to a space. Staining the hoops really gives them a vintage feel. Thanks for the inspiration
