In this post: Want a super-easy way to keep your toilet fresh between cleanings? Try our DIY toilet bombs made with essential oils and baking soda for a fresh clean scent!
One of my least favorite tasks around the house is cleaning the toilet. I’m pretty sure it’s not your favorite either. But you can extend the length of time between cleanings by making and using these DIY toilet bombs!
DIY Toilet Bombs for Easy Cleaning
Materials
- 1 ⅓ cup baking soda
- ½ cup citric acid
- 1 tsp water
- Essential oils – lemon, lavender and/or peppermint are all good options!
- Silicone mold
- amber spray bottle
You could use either tap water or distilled water in your homemade cleaning products. The reasons for using distilled vs tap water would depend on your local tap water. If your tap water has a lot of minerals in it (i.e. if you have hard water), it could leave “water marks”, which would of course be annoying when you’re trying to clean!
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the baking soda and citric acid.
- In a spray bottle, mix the water and essential oils.
- Spray the water and oil mix into the baking soda and citric acid. It will fizzle a little bit, but that’s ok. (If you don’t have a spray bottle just be sure to add the water mix VERY slowly!)
- Mix around until it is all damp. The mixture should feel a bit like damp sand. If it’s too crumbly, add a bit more water a tiny bit at a time (to avoid creating a fizzy reaction).
- Press into mold and allow to sit out and harden for a few hours.
- Transfer to a jar or an airtight container.

To Use Your DIY Toilet Bombs
When you’re ready to use your toilet bombs, simply drop one in your toilet bowl, let fizz, and then flush. Your toilet bowl will look and smell fresh, no scrubbing is needed!
Why they work
Baking Soda – Baking soda is a mildly abrasive cleaner and makes an excellent deodorizer.
Citric Acid – Citric Acid give the toilet bombs that fizzy effect and helps to dissolve hard water stains in the toilet bowl.
Essential Oils – The essential oils help to kill germs and leave a fresh clean scent behind after the toilet bomb dissolves.

I like this idea- I could toss one in when last minute company is coming and I think the bombs would even look cute in a glass jar in the bathroom. How big are they? About the size of an ice cube?
Thanks!
Yes! Last minute cleaning, for the win! And yes, about the size of an ice cube, give or take.
These look wonderful! Pinned.

Wonderful DIY! And they look so neat… (I’ve seen some that look a bit messy, if you know what I mean). Here from Home and Garden Link Party… Pinning to my DIY Dreams Board!
Great idea! It seems super simple too! This would make my dreaded bathroom chore not so awful.
Thanks for joining #WanderingWednesday! đŸ™‚
I’ll be these smell amazing! What a great idea!
Love this! Just to verify it’s 1 teaspoon of water, not 1 TABLESPOON? That 1 tsp just doesn’t seem like enough to make it lightly damp (the dry ingredients). Also, mine puffed up once pressed into the silicon . Is that supposed to happen or did my first round of the just flop?
Such a great idea! I have made Shower Bombs for when my kids need help with their breathing when they have a cold, but I really like this! Thank you for sharing with us last week at our Encouraging Hearts & Home Blog Hop đŸ™‚
How much do you think one bomb measures? One tablespoon or two?
I think two? Give or take a little.
Hello! I love this! What do you use for the citric acid/where do you get it?
Hi Laura,
I’m so glad you love it! You can probably find citric acid in a health food store near you. Or order it on Amazon. (<-- affiliate link)
Thanks! I found what appears to be a good deal on Amazon: guess what I’ll be making this weekend!? I have a toilet that tends to get moldy easily because it’s not used as often as the one in the main bathroom. I’m excited to be able to pop in a pod in between cleanings to help prevent that from happening!
Perfect! And great use of the toilet bombs for sure!! Yay! đŸ™‚
Thanks! I used lemon juice for my citric acid and lemon essential oil. Adding the juice to the baking soda is the really fizzy part. I didn’t have an issue with adding the water/oil. I am looking forward to trying various oils.
Can these be frozen to speed up the hardening process or does that ruin them?
I honestly don’t know as I haven’t tried freezing them!
How much of the essential oil do you put in the mixture?
That is entirely up to you. Try it with 10-20 drops and see how you like it. Then adjust from there for the next batch.
I have wondered if the toilet bombs could be used in the tank to remove rust and clean the channels that link the tank to the bowl? I am often in a wheelchair and it grosses me out when I can see those nasty black marks around those holes where the water goes into the toilet bowl.
I’m not sure that anything should be used in the tank. I’m sorry!
I just saw this and am so thrilled to make. Would it be okay to make a larger batch? If so, how would you recommend storing them & how long do you think they’ll last?
Thank you!
Yay! Yes, you could. I don’t know the details of that though as I haven’t made a larger batch.
