Our Bungalow Before & After: Dining Room {2009 & 2011}

We’ve lived in this house for just about two years. Living here now, we sometimes forget how much our bungalow has changed in that time. So we thought it would be fun to do a little series of before and afters of some of the room that have changed the most…starting with the dining room. Why the dining room? Um, just cause! (Btw, pretty please forgive the before pics…I so did not know what I was doing with the camera!)

For those of you who have been around for awhile, you know my desk/office space is in the dining room. It’s a bit of a strange combo I admit, but it works for us and it means I don’t have to have a desk in my bedroom (the only other place for one in our little bungalow). And I use the industrial desk for a buffet table (mostly a dessert table) when we have company. Perfect! Anywho, here’s what my desk area looked like on house inspection day…

Don’t ya just love that yellow, with the yellow-er trim?! Ack! And here’s the same space after we moved in – while we were renovating the kitchen…

This is really what that snot-yellow looked like! The table shown functioned as our sole counter and cook space while the kitchen was demo’d. Let’s just say it was an interesting experience.

And as for how the same part of the room looks now…SO much better. Dean built me the vintage industrial desk – have I mentioned I love that man? – and I found the chair on kijiji.

We spent a lot of time creating a good space from this other wall which temporarily housed a less than glam desk space…

But is now home to our gorgeous script wall and refinished buffet & hutch.

As for the rest of the dining room, well it’s come a long way too. This is a very blurry realtor pic of the living room/dining room…

And this is the dining room while we were redoing the kitchen all full of kitchen stuff and new appliances. Cuh-razay!

Are ya diggin’ the curtains?! What about that allover snot-yellow paint?  See why our friends thought we were nutso?!

BUT here is what we did with with the dining room…

MUCH better, no? What took us many months and loads of work to actually complete is actually what I knew the space could be all along: the PERFECT place to entertain family and friends.

So, what do you think? Would you have thought we were crazy at the beginning? Do you like what we did with the space? Do you have a space you could transform into something gorgeous with a little elbow grease?

P.S. Watch for more Before & Afters over the next week or so.

P.S.S. Thank you to all our readers who have been around for awhile – we appreciate you more than you know. And for those of you who are new around these parts – WELCOME! We’re so glad you’re all here!

    1. It looks very different, doesn’t it? It also smells much better! Lol – no more musty old house smell. 🙂

  1. Oooh, I love a good before & after! You have done so much in two years! Love it! Thank you for your blog – I find it so inspiring.

  2. TRULY amazing. What an eye you two have for a space. Vision, really.
Look forward to seeing more Before & Afters 🙂

    1. Hi Sarah! I’ve edited a tonne of pics today…I’ll post more b&a over the next couple of weeks…stay tuned!

  3. Oh, I remember it so well. It seems like a totally different house now. You guys are awesome, so creative and so resourceful.

    1. Isn’t crazy, Clare? The day after we moved when you brought the kids home, you thought we were nuts, didn’t you? Frankly that day – after sleeping in a room with no walls and scrubbing the shower with a magic eraser – I thought we were perhaps a little off our rocker too!

  4. Your vision was what convinced you to buy the house in the first place… that is a talent. Many buyers would look at the yellow walls, outdated curtains, etc. and not even want to consider the house. You have completely changed everything and created a really comfortable looking place to live, such a beautiful job! (Do you feel like having the old owners in to have a look?)

    1. Hi Julie! Thank you for the sweet words. It took me a little while to realize that everyone can’t see past ugly to what could be…I always though everyone could! Call me clueless! Sometimes I think the old owners may like it, but sometimes I worry I’m offending then when I don’t like their choices. 🙁

  5. Wow…I mean W.O.W!
We just closed on a house yesterday. Now to sell our current home.
Your blog is so inspiring! Love your style and DIY “can do” attitude.
    Be Blessed
