What You Focus On Grows
There's a saying that goes something like “what you focus on grows”. It's a self-help, motivational sort of saying.
Of course you can't actually make something grow just by focusing on it. (How cool would that be though?)
What it actually means that what you focus your thoughts on grows larger in your mind.
This is where practicing an attitude of gratitude (Oprah) and don't sweat the small stuff (Richard Carlson) are really good things (Martha).
Sorry. Couldn't help myself!
But it's true.
The Bible even has clear instructions on what we're to focus our thoughts on:
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” – Philippians 4:8
In other words, don't dwell on the not-so-awesome things.
No grumbling, no complaining.
That can be so tough, right?
But dear, beautiful friend, that is THE biggest secret to being content with your home RIGHT NOW.
Love Your Home by Focusing on the Good
Yes, we are going to talk about how to easily, at little cost, improve upon the current state of your home.
But today we are going to focus on what you already like or love about your home.
Now before you accuse me of only loving my home and focusing on the good in it because of the home we have currently, please don't.
We have lived in 10 homes before this. Aside from several apartments as newlyweds, we've lived in a 2 bedroom basement apartment with two small children for 4 years, a tiny townhouse for 5 years, a dilapidated war era bungalow for 3 years and a small backsplit for 4 years.
I LOVED EVERY ONE OF THOSE HOMES because I looked past their flaws and focused on the good things. Ask Dean – I cried every single time we started talking about moving.
You can love your home if you look for its good qualities. Even if you have to hunt really hard for those good qualities.
I want you to go grab a piece of paper and a pen or open up Evernote. Then I want you to write down all the things you like or love about your home. Every. Single. Thing.
For some of you, it will only take a few minutes. But for others it may take a little longer to really dig in and identify the good things.
And that's okay.
